Confirmation Letter to Msgr. Peter Rau
At our day retreat, our Candidates will be writing a letter to Monsignor about why they want to be confirmed and how they intend to live their Catholic faith beyond the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. The sessions and activities of the day will help the Candidates explore the topics and create their letter; they do not need to do anything prior to Saturday.
Using the letter format outlined below, the Confirmand’s letter to the pastor should contain the following:
Dear Monsignor Rau:
This letter is to inform you that I am requesting the Sacrament of Confirmation.
A Request to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation –
Briefly explain why you want to be confirmed in the Catholic Church. Explain what Confirmation means to you and why it is important that you receive the sacrament. It is important to provide specific information about why you want to be confirmed.
An Explanation of your spiritual preparation for Confirmation –
While it is good to note the formal preparations within the church setting, such as the fall sessions and retreat / afternoon of reflection, it is more important to address how you are preparing for Confirmation in your personal life – For example: through prayer; through regular participation in the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation; through the use of the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. Also –
- Explain how any service experiences have deepened your spiritual life and contributed to your Confirmation preparations.
- Take time to honestly evaluate your spiritual life and note areas where you are strong in your faith as well as areas needing improvement.
- Explain why you feel you are ready to embrace the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Explain how you will use the graces of Confirmation in your future –
Explain how you plan to stay connected to God throughout your life. Evaluate the role the Holy Spirit will play in your spiritual growth. Tell how you will continue to serve others and God in your life, and how you plan to live out your Confirmation promises in the future.
Conclude with thanksgiving –
Thank your parish for their role in preparing you for Confirmation. Tell Msgr. Peter that you appreciate his spiritual leadership and teachings in the parish. If you have a personal relationship with your priest, note a specific attribute or quality that he shares for which you are thankful.
